UPDATED: The Superman Movie Teaser Poster?
Apr 01, 2005

2006 can't come fast enough.

I have now confirmed that this poster was a fan project, not the official deal. You can read more about it and see the artist's work here.

The Doctor is...OUT?!?
Mar 31, 2005
I've let this blog go horribly this year, but I did want to slip in at least one entry for the month of March before it's too late so here goes...

In disappointing news, the new "Doctor Who," Christopher Eccleston, has already declined to return to the part for a 2nd set of 13 new episodes just commissioned by the BBC. The first new episode debuted to great ratings over there, and so they are already gearing up to make more, but Eccleston won't return for fear of being "typecast." Man, we don't even know when we will get the chance to see these over here, and the guy's already leaving. The Sci-Fi Channel has passed on the series, but what do you expect from the brainiacs that cancelled Farscape. I hope somebody picks it up. If not, I'm sure it will be soon be available at a convention bootleg DVD table near you. For more from the BBC, click here.

Spreading the Word...Deadshot and Global Frequency
Feb 04, 2005
I've been so busy getting the site back in shape and doing things with the Convention Awards that I haven't made an entry in quite a while, but I wanted to take a second to mention 2 things I'm enjoying/enjoyed.

First up is the Deadshot mini-series from DC, featuring the cult favorite Suicide Squad character. Pretty much a mature readers title, the book features a lot of violence, and the bodycount is growing, as Deadshot tries to clean out the gangs from the neighborhood where his newly-discovered daughter lives. "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" writer Christos N. Gage seems to be hitting a home run his first time at bat in the comics world, and I will definitely try to follow what else he ends up doing. I would love to see his desire to revive Suicide Squad come to pass. You can read more about it in this interview with Gage.

And I also wanted to take the time to mention Global Frequency. I read this in 2 trade paperbacks, and I have to tell you, once I picked them up, I had a hard time putting them down until I finished. Although not for the faint of heart, with sometimes horrific violence, I loved this book, and it kills me that the WB passed on the pilot for the proposed TV show version. This would have made an awesome show, and I hope it still comes to pass somehow. The comic features an organization of 1,001 private citizens who can be activated at any time to deal with terrorist attacks, goverment experiements gone awry, natural disasters, etc. By the way, and here's a rarity for you these days, each issue of the series is self-contained so if you don't want to commit yourself to a whole trade, pick up a couple of issues and see what you think. I do suggest that you pick up more than one though, as the stories can vary greatly from issue to issue. Similar to Warren Ellis's other title Planetary (another of my favorites), Warren explores different genres.

Cyclops to Battle Superman!
Jan 13, 2005
I haven't done one of these in a while, what with the holidays and my behind-the-scenes preparations for the debut of Pop Culture Reference and the 2005 Convention Awards. But this headline was just too good to pass up. Newsarama, by way of The Hollywood Reporter, is reporting that James Marsden, who plays Cyclops in the X-Men Movies, will play a rival love interest for Lois Lane in Bryan Singer's new Superman movie. He'll play a relative of Perry White, who's going to be played by House/Stuart Little star Hugh Laurie, by the way. I hope that doesn't cause Marsden any problems participating in X-Men 3.

DC's Ultimate "All-Stars"
Dec 22, 2004
So the news is slipping out about DC's big announcement in Wizard today. I must say that I am somewhat disappointed. It doesn't affect the DC Universe. Instead, it's a new line - "All-Star" that exists in a timeless continuity geared toward more toward the general public and the casual fan. Not quite the Ultimate universe. This line will feature stories where Dick Grayson is Robin, and Lois Lane doesn't know Clark Kent is Superman.

I think DC is being pretty smart about it so far. By putting Jim Lee on All-Star Batman and Robin and Grant Morrison on All-Star Superman, they are ensuring that the existing fanbase will buy the books, while at the same time, the public gestalt-continuity versions may boost sales amongst the general public.

It does leave me questions, though. Once Grant leaves, does the next Superman writer has to be consistent with Grant's continuity? And what happens if you run out of top talent? They won't be able to keep people on these titles for too long.

John Crichton Enters the Stargate
Dec 17, 2004
According to Sci Fi.com, Ben Browder, best known for playing "Commander John Crichton" on the series Farcape, will be joining the cast of Stargate SG-1 for their upcoming ninth season. While I would much rather be hearing news about Farscape returning again in some form, I'm happy for the actor.

Identity Dud
Dec 16, 2004
Well, I picked up Identity Crisis #7 yesterday. Although I order my comics through the mail, I actually went over to my local comics shop yesterday and bought a copy because I didn't want the ending spoiled for me, and I knew I would be unable to avoid the online discussion. A lot of people said the ending would surprise us. A lot of people said Brad Meltzer wouldn't let us down. Well, those people were wrong. I did feel let down. One of the more popular online theories about the killer turned out to be true (and I've even read better motivations from the theorists than was offered in the story). The storyline ends with a whimper, not a bang. The issue of the killer is resolved early in the issue. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. For the true mastermind of it all to be revealed. But that reveal never came. And ultimately, it didn't make a lot of sense. I can forgive all the misdirection...the plot elements that only served to throw us off track...but ultimately the ending was just weak. Why was Jack Drake targeted? Because DC wanted it, apparently. This DC mandate is one of the worst aspects of the story because it seems highly unlikely that the killer would know the secret identity of Robin. And the motivation of the killer was weak. I won't go into it because that would reveal who it is but read it for yourself, and you'll see what I mean.

I hope DC Countdown/Crisis is better than this. Part of my theory is that DC is willing to let things get so screwed up right now because they may be going to reboot everything anyway. We'll see...

Wonder Woman or X-Men 3? Decisions, decisions...
Dec 15, 2004
Ain't It Cool News is reporting the rumor (emphasize rumor) that Joss Whedon is in negotiations to write and direct a Wonder Woman movie for Warner Brothers. And Fox is interested in him directing X-Men 3, but he will probably only have time to direct one or the other. So who do you see putting on the bracelets? Sarah Michelle Gellar or Charisma Carpenter?
